Hi Everyone, We've made an update to our Penelope Manual. The following pages have been updated. Installing Texsolv Apron Ties (Pages 6-7) The new instructions and photos show a more efficient way of installing the Texsolv Apron Ties. We highly recommend that existing owners switch their Apron Ties to be attached in this manner. Tips & Tricks (Page 22) We've added two sections of information concerning making sure your warp is centered and that when weaving wide warps that your warp is evenly distributed across nearly the full length of the warp beam. -Evanita

Hello! It’s me again. I know it’s been a while since I’ve spoken here, but I cannot express how much we appreciate all of you! It truly has been a blessing to be able to watch our business and family “flock” grow throughout these years. I wanted to take this moment to thank all of you for your interest in our products - your support helps all of the members of our local team of skilled fiber-crazy people and their families, who work so hard to make our products as good as they can be. We thank you. And speaking of products, oh boy oh boy oh… The stuff we are going to be announcing at the upcoming State of the Flock Address on December 6th is going to be epic! I’m not kidding. I’m sure you know I’m not prone to carelessly wield hyperboles, but we have a few product announcements that are, in order: Cool! A handy change to the ergonomics of an oldie but goodie. Awesome! A new product design that has been requested forever, a useful update for travelling with your birdies. And the last, is… hard to put into words. Ground breaking. Emotionally visceral. The culmination of years of constant review and reconsideration of all things sacred. This is a project that has been so near and dear to me all of these years, and only now is Daedalus ready to attack this challenge with a vigor hitherto unseen. That’s right - I said hitherto. And I’m not joking. I’m genuinely trembling with excitement in the anticipation of this announcement, and how everything you know will be turned on its ear. Rhinebeck Wrap Up Well, we’re back from Rhinebeck, and geez, are we fulfilled. The leaves were beautiful, the doughnuts were exactly as I remembered(YUM), the knitwear on display(OH MY!), all the vendors brought their “A Game,” as usual, and the crowds did not disappoint. We want to thank everyone for coming out to the festival and for stopping by the booth. We want to shout out to just a couple of the many smiling faces that came by to see us: Fiber Artist, Thomas Victor, it is always a pleasure to see you, Podcasters, Needles at the Ready, I see a magpie in your future hehehe, Fiber Arts Teacher, Debbie Held, hope your classes went well. We want to follow up with a huge thank you to all the new and returning customers who trusted us with your purchase. We’re always here if you need some help. How to Prepare for the Shop Update General Make sure you have a Daedalus Shop account. If you haven't already signed up for a shop account login already on the shop, you'll want to ensure you do that ahead of time. At the top of the shop, you'll see a little person icon. Simply click on this, and on the next page, you'll click "Create account" to set up your account. Please ensure you fill out all the information and set up your shipping address so you don't have to worry about that later. We highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with our shop. For the best shopping experience, we recommend using a device that is capable of using Apple Pay or Google Pay. These methods of payment, if set up, are extremely quick. We also recommend if using PayPal to ensure that you are already logged in to your PayPal account in advance. You'll want to ensure you add any additional items you'd like to purchase before the shop update. This could include things like a Speed Controller, which is required to operate our wheels. If you already have one of our wheels, you don't need to purchase another controller. You can also add extra packs of bobbins, and a motor extension cable. Anything you can prepare in advance so that you can get through checkout as quickly as possible will improve your chances of scoring a wheel. Our machines are in high demand, so they can go quickly, but we encourage everyone who would like one of our wheels, winders and/or looms to try, and if you don't succeed in this batch, there will be more batches in the future! Dolder About the Starling V3FP Starling V3/V3FP was conceived to be our “all around” spinning wheel, capable of processing the widest range of yarns that would satisfy the vast majority of our clients. The ultra lightweight design lends itself very well towards the light end of that spectrum, with the standard flyer easily capable of lace finer than 100 wraps per inch (WPI). Since fine yarns is what Daedalus designs do best, we recently came up with a Lace Flyer for Starling V3/V3FP, extending its ability well into embroidery threads in the 200+ WPI range. However, it was recently pointed out to us that most of our wheels lean towards these finer yarns, and the only true Art Flyer was built for the mighty Magpie. But this is our flagship production spinner, and thus leaves the vast majority of our customers without a good option for art yarns. So, in an effort to stay faithful to the original design goal of a wheel to please everyone, and with the broadest spinning range available in mind. Dave went back to the drawing board with a fresh vision and created the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. One of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. The flyer shoulders and guides now use an open metal bars instead of enclosed loops, which help achieve both of these goals. This new feature has actually surpassed our expectations, with testers noting how easily and fluidically the yarn gets onto the bobbin. In addition, It uses the same bobbins as the Starling Standard Flyer, giving the spinner approximately 3-3.5 oz of capacity for bulky yarns. While this capacity may not be tailored to the extensive production of art yarn, it is just right for the hobbyist. Whether you are experimenting or testing out fresh ideas that you may wish to explore before embarking on a larger project, the Starling Art Flyer gives you options not previously available to this model. With all three flyers—the Lace, Standard, and Art—the Starling becomes the spinner's perfect class wheel. Offering a world of unlimited possibilities while learning and exploring the art of spinning. Since fine yarns is what Daedalus designs do best, we recently came up with a Lace Flyer for Starling V3/V3FP, extending its ability well into embroidery threads in the 200+ WPI range. However, it was recently pointed out to us that most of our wheels lean towards these finer yarns, and the only true Art Flyer was built for the mighty Magpie. But this is our flagship production spinner, and thus leaves the vast majority of our customers without a good option for art yarns. So, in an effort to stay faithful to the original design goal of a wheel to please everyone, and with the broadest spinning range available in mind. Dave went back to the drawing board with a fresh vision and created the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. One of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. The flyer shoulders and guides now use an open metal bars instead of enclosed loops, which help achieve both of these goals. This new feature has actually surpassed our expectations, with testers noting how easily and fluidically the yarn gets onto the bobbin. In addition, It uses the same bobbins as the Starling Standard Flyer, giving the spinner approximately 3-3.5 oz of capacity for bulky yarns. While this capacity may not be tailored to the extensive production of art yarn, it is just right for the hobbyist. Rainbow Hearts in Crochet Cotton # 10 (12mm wide band) Through my journey weaving with Penelope, I try to learn new techniques with each new pattern I try.. I came across these cute little hearts in the Braids and Bands Facebook group, posted by Cerelle Woods—the original pattern by Mari Voipio. I may have bitten off more than I could chew, as there have been a lot of hiccups along the way. Part of these How to Blogs is to help ensure everyone is off to a good start on their projects, and hopefully, this one will help you all avoid some of the little snafus I ran into. Pattern Drafts As I started this journey, I followed the pattern draft I found on the FB group and the instructions. I had everything warped up, but the pattern just wasn’t forming. I checked and checked to make sure I warped everything correctly. I also thought of comparing it to the draft available on Twisted Threads, as it takes the draft and shows you exactly how it will weave up. As soon as I compared the two drafts, it hit me that the pattern was drafted A, B, C, D, while Twisted Threads patterns are drafted D, C, B, A. So what difference does that make? Well, in the case of this pattern that has all forward turns, I had to switch to all backward turns in order for the pattern to form. Another thing I noticed on the draft was the slant of the threads vs what was labeled at the bottom did not match up. For some drafts, S and Z can apply to the yarn slant rather than the card slant. This pattern was displaying both which definitely added to the confusion. Draft formatting can vary, and the way the letters on cards can vary as well! There isn’t a universal way of drafting tablet patterns, so it’s good to keep this in mind. The 3D Printed Daedalus cards are set up the same way as Twisted Threads, so when in doubt, you can always draft up your pattern there to verify in advance that it will work as planned or whether you’ll need to make adjustments. Starting Point Can Matter After sorting out the pattern draft problems, I got to weaving and noticed that my weft was not catching the outside edges of the band. I learned that the side your weft enters at the start can affect your weaving. After unweaving and starting over, I switched the side I entered for the weft, and like magic, everything clicked into place. For the way I have drafted up this pattern, the weft starts by entering from the left side. Depicted in this photo is what occurs if you start the weft from the right side at the beginning of the warp. Some of the left and right side warp threads do not get caught by the weft. Idling Tablets? This pattern has tablets that idle. When a card idles, it means that for that pick, it remains in its current position. The tablets are separated into two groups: Odds and Evens. Each pick for this pattern has either Odds moving forward or Evens moving forward. There’s a catch, though! Tablet number 15 is treated as an even number. To help make it easier to separate the tablets, I used white tablets for odd and black tablets for evens (plus 15). Grouping tablets Since this pattern has two distinct groups of cards, Evens+15 and Odds, to make it easier to rotate your cards, you can slide the groups so they are staggered from each other. This can make it easy to rotate the groupings as well as compare the position of the groups to know which group needs to rotate next. Keeping the two groups of cards overlapping can help avoid them from getting tangled. Pattern Information Tablets - 15 Square Tablets (7 in one color and 8 in a different color) Colors - Black (background) and Rainbow (hearts) Warp Threads - 39 Black and 21 Rainbow Twist - The pattern is not twist neutral Threading Chart - The sloping line below each tablet shows you how to orient that tablet. The slope of the tablet when viewed from above should make the slope of the line. Weaving Instructions - You will start with D, A at the top of the cards with A nearest you. Starting with pick 1, rotate all EVEN cards plus 15 forward (odds except 15 will idle). On the next pick, rotate all ODD cards except 15 Forward (all evens plus 15 will idle). Continue this pattern, always rotating forward. Remember that the with the first pick you will be entering the warp from the left. Slanted with white background means turn tablet forward. A circle means don't turn this tablet this pick. Twisted Threads Link - https://twistedthreads.org/pattern/cuuKT7x47ki9imd8o Dealing with Non Twist-Neutral Patterns In order to remove twist as it accumulates, the warp will need to bypass the Warp Beam. To do this, the warp will be secured through the back clamp. Small bobbins such as Beadsmith Bob-EEZ Cord Management bobbins, are a great way to keep your warp manageable for this type of weaving. The following information is what worked for me to help manage the twist. Back Clamp Tips & Tricks Seating the top of the Back Clamp backwards can make it easier to adjust each tablet’s tension. When adjusting the tension, secure the Back Clamp gently so that thread bundles can be pulled, but still secure enough that once pulled, they are still somewhat secured. Start on one side, pulling each bundle and holding them taut. Once you’ve done one half, tighten down that side’s knob. Continue to pull the thread bundles taut on the other side, and then tighten down the knob. Test the clamp’s tightness by gently pulling a bundle to see if it moves. Check the tautness of the warp to ensure that all bundles are evenly tensioned. Sometimes individual threads need to be tightened. Be careful not to pull too hard, as this can risk snapping threads Removing Excess Twist Tips and Tricks Before releasing tension on your project to advance your warp or remove excess twist, always secure cards with at least one large safety pin. Loosening the front clamp to allow a small amount of slack helps when moving the twist past the Back Beam. Using a needle or metal double pointed needle can help with moving the twist. I did this card by card, as attempting to do multiples can make it harder to move the twist back. Twist can be displaced between the back of the Back Beam and the Back Clamp. I found I could do this for a few repeats to prolong having to release the Back Clamp to deal with removing the twist. The number of repeats you can do before having to undo the twist will depend on your pattern, yarn, and the distance between your finished weaving and the Back Beam. It can be helpful to use a rod to keep bobbins organized and easy to manage, but when removing twist, you’ll need to remove them from the rod and manage the twist on each bobbin individually. Using the Raddle can help section out your bundles for easier management when dealing with twist removal. Once the raddle is not needed, it can be rotated out of the way to the bottom of the Back Beam. After removing the twist, make sure all bundles are taut before fully securing the back clamp. Rainbow and Color Repeats For this pattern, I wanted to make the hearts a graduated rainbow. There are two ways to accomplish this, depending on the look you want. The easy route is to make each tablet that makes up the hearts a single color of the rainbow. This would provide a side-to-side rainbow on each heart. The look I wanted was for each heart to be a solid color and transition slowly from one color to the next. To achieve this look, you need to find a yarn with color repeats. I tested two different rainbow yarns, the first being Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Cotton # 10 and the other Lizbeth Threads Size 80. Lisbeth Size 80, Lisbeth Size 40, Aunt Lydia's Crochet Cotton # 10 The following are the steps I took to set up this warp. It can take quite a bit of time to get it just right but remember warping is half the project. Step 1: Determine the length of a full color repeat. For the Size 80 thread, the full rainbow is approximately 56 inches. Step 2: Determine the length you want to weave, keeping in mind the number of color repeats that will occur within that length. You’ll want the end of the warp to be just before the start of the color repeat to make cutting the lengths easier. I needed at least 112 inches of finished weaving, so I decided on 3 full repeats (56*3=168), which gives me plenty of extra to account for the waste in the warp. The waste in the warp is the areas that cannot be woven, such as the small portion at the start of the warp, along with the last bit at the end of the warp. Step 3: Cutting and matching up the lengths. When cutting the warp threads, align the next length as best as possible to coordinate the colors. There will be some slight inconsistencies where some colors may start a wee bit earlier, later, or even a section where the color is not quite the same. You can choose how you wish to handle this. I had some issues with some of the yellow sections being a bit muddy with the crochet cotton, so I intentionally removed the lengths where the colors were less desirable. Less than ideal yellow section on Crochet Cotton # 10 Example of color changes not matching up. This can be a fun effect when desired. Color changes matching up beautifully Step 4: Match up lengths for each tablet. My first attempt with crochet cotton # 10 I wound the length between two Clampy Kates to observe how the colors matched throughout the length to ensure I was happy with the transitions. For the size 80 thread, I opted to wind the thread onto sample cards. Once ready, I wound the end of the bundle onto a bobbin, keeping the yarn taut to ensure threads remained aligned. Step 5: You’ll need the raddle installed when setting up the warp on the loom. Place each thread bundle in its corresponding slot on the raddle and drape it over the bottom of the back clamp. Once all thread bundles are in place, lightly clamp down the back clamp. Step 6: Pull all bundles towards the front of the loom. Step 7: Thread each bundle into its corresponding tablet as instructed by the pattern draft. I made all odd-number cards white and all even-number cards(plus 15) black to make separating the idle from rotating cards easier. Step 8: Once all the tablets are threaded check each bundle, line up the colors, and secure it with a knot as close to the end as possible. Step 9: While holding a group of 3-5 bundles together, view the color changes and pull bundles either forward or backward to ensure colors are lined up as best as possible. Once satisfied, tie the group of bundles together. I tied the 3 black bundles on either side and then divided the rainbow into a 4 and 5 grouping. Viewing the back of the loom can help with alignment. Using a popsicle stick between the top and bottom layers to help with aligning. Step 10: If needed, you may need to adjust individual strands. For bobbins with individual strand adjustments, you’ll want to rewind the bobbin after you’ve got the warp set up to pick up any slack that was created. Step 11: Once satisfied with the color transitions, tie a knot at the beginning of the warp. Additional Tips & Tricks When using finer yarns using scrap yarn to start off with can make it easier to transition the width to the width needed. For this pattern I used scrap yarn for a whole heart repeat. In addition to helping with the band width the use of the scrap yarn to secure everything into place can help with refining the tension on the back of the loom before starting to weave. Finer yarns can tangle easily and accidentally create little slip knots if the yarn gets extra twisty. This can cause potential issues with the weft that can be easily remedied by using a needle to keep it from twisting on itself as you are pulling it. For holding these bobbins, I like to use a rod that I can place Akerworks Tensi Tamers on to secure the bobbins safely in order. Thoughts on Yarn Lisbeth Size 80, Lisbeth Size 40, Aunt Lydia's Crochet Cotton # 10 Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Cotton # 10 It weaves up beautifully and is very easy to work with. I did find that the color repeats were not quite as accurate as I would like, with some of the spacing being a wee bit off or the color being slightly off in particularly with the yellow, which was not as bright a yellow as I had hoped, and some yellow sections were a bit muddy. Since you are cutting each warp thread, you can easily remove sections as needed. Lisbeth Threads (Size 40 and 80) This thread is awesome to work with. I’ve used size 40 for shoelaces and 80 for shoelaces with patterns that are a bit too wide to weave up on size 40 thread. The colors are vivid, and the repeats are extremely consistent. Lisbeth comes in a variety of sizes. I’m planning to get all sizes in the future to have a better grasp of weight comparison with other weaving yarns. Lizbeth comes in smaller balls than Aunt Lydia’s, but the quality and wide color selection make them totally worth it. Indie Dyed Yarns I'm still exploring this route but it's definitely a fantastic possibility! I commissioned a rainbow silk (50/2) from Hook & Shuttle and I'm eager to work with it after I finish my size 80 band. I've not woven with silk on Penelope yet but I'm eager to see how beautifully this will weave up. That’s a Warp… I mean Wrap I hope that this information helps anyone who would like to play with this pattern, as well as play with yarns that have color repeats. There are so many things you can do with yarns that change colors over time. I’m contemplating rainbow sheep; they would be so adorable! I learned a lot over the course of tackling this new-to-me pattern, and I hope that you can learn from the bumps I had along the way to have a much smoother journey. In your spares kit bag you will find all the materials you need to create a tension belt. All of our wheels except for Sparrow use Kevlar for the tension which requires a sharp pair of scissors to cut. Listed below are instructions on how to create a tension belt for each Daedalus wheel. Each wheel comes with extra materials for making tension belts. Should you require more you can find tension kits on our shop. Martin & Starling Standard Flyer Tension Belt Materials Kevlar 1.5 mm Spring Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue Tie the length of spare Kevlar to the closed wire loop side of the spring. (A&B) With sharp scissors, cut the excess off the belt. Hold excess taut across the blade of the scissors to aid with cutting. (C) Measure 12 inches (300mm) overall length from the top of the spring and cut the kevlar using the same technique as above. Apply a small amount of super glue (or beeswax) to this cut end to prevent fraying. When applying super glue, do so in between bits of paper towel to blot excess glue and lessen the chances of getting glue on your fingers. Then quickly roll the end firmly between your fingers to form the end into more of a point. Consider wearing rubber gloves to keep your fingers 100% glue-free. (D&E) Install Cinch, as shown approximately 8.5 inches (215mm) from the top of the spring. You will need to fine-tune this length for your wheel so that there is minimal spring extension when in use. Martin & Starling Standard Flyer Tension Belt Starling Lace Flyer Tension Belt Materials Kevlar 1 mm Spring Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue To create a Starling Ultra-Light Tension for the Starling Lace Flyer , use the same instructions as the Starling Standard Flyer, except use the 1.0 mm Kevlar, and instead of a spring you’ll tie on an elastic from your Starling Lace Flyer spares kit. Top: Starling Standard Tension - Bottom: Starling Ultra Light Tension Sparrow Tension Belt In your spares kit bag, you will find all the materials you need to create a tension belt. The Tension Belt is made of black rat tail, a nylon based cord. To more easily see the belt making steps, the instructions are depicting the Kevlar belt we use on our other wheels. Do not use Kevlar on your Sparrow as it can damage 3d printed whorls (flyer and older non-Aluminum drum Sparrow bobbins). Tension Belt Materials Rat tail 1.5 mm (Black) Spring Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue Tie the rat tail to the closed loop side of the spring. (A) Pull tight with a small loop of rat tail remaining at the spring. (B) With sharp scissors, cut the excess off the belt. Hold excess taut across the blade of the scissors to aid with cutting. (C) Cut the belt so the overall length is 10 inches (250mm). To prevent fraying, use a lighter to melt the ends of the belt. Alternatively, add a small amount of super glue to this cut end to prevent fraying. When applying super glue, do so in between bits of paper towel to blot excess glue and lessen the chances of getting glue on your fingers. Then quickly roll the end firmly between your fingers to form the end into more of a point. Consider wearing rubber gloves to keep your fingers 100% glue-free. (D&E) Install Cinch, as shown approximately 7 inches (170mm) from the top of the spring. You will need to fine-tune this length for your wheel so that there is minimal spring extension when in use. Sparrow Tension Belt (Do NOT use Kevlar) Magpie Standard and Art Magpie Standard Flyer Tension Belt Materials Kevlar 1.5 mm Spring Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue Using pliers, take a spring and close up the “open” loop side of the spring. This will prevent anything from slipping off later. Now both ends of the spring should be closed loops. (A&B) Using 4-5 inches of spare Kevlar or any other non-elastic cording, tie an approximately 2-inch loop on one end of the spring. This loop allows you to use the spring side on the left when spinning clockwise and on the right when spinning counterclockwise, and also helps keep the spring silent. (C&D) With sharp scissors, cut the excess off the loop. Hold excess taut across the blade of the scissors to aid with cutting. (E) Tie spare Kevlar onto the other closed loop end of the spring. Use sharp scissors to cut the excess and discard. (F-H) Measure from the start of 2-inch loop and cut the tension belt so the overall length is 24 inches (600mm) and cut with sharp scissors. Apply a small amount of super glue (or Beeswax) to this cut end to prevent fraying. When applying super glue, do so in between bits of paper towel to blot excess glue and lessen the chances of getting glue on your fingers. Then quickly roll the end firmly between your fingers to form the end into more of a point. Consider wearing rubber gloves to keep your fingers 100% glue-free. (I&J) Install Cinch, as shown approximately 13 inches (325mm) from the top of the loop. You will need to fine-tune this length for your wheel so that there is minimal spring extension when in use. Install the loop end of the tension belt onto the right side tension hook on the wheel. Drape up and over the bobbin’s aluminum brake drum, and then down and around the anchor cleat on the left side of the wheel. Remove any slack as you thread the tension belt back through the other side of the Cinch. (K&L) Top: Magpie Art Tension - Bottom: Magpie Standard Tension Magpie Art Flyer Tension Belt Materials Kevlar 1.5 mm Spring (optional) Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue Tie the spare Kevlar to form an approximately 2-inch diameter loop at one end. With sharp scissors, cut the excess off the belt. Hold excess taut across the blade of the scissors to aid with cutting. Measure from the start of the loop and cut the tension belt so the overall length is 24 inches (600mm). Apply a small amount of super glue (or Beeswax) to this cut end to prevent fraying. When applying super glue, do so in between bits of paper towel to blot excess glue and lessen the chances of getting glue on your fingers. Then quickly roll the end firmly between your fingers to form the end into more of a point. Consider wearing rubber gloves to keep your fingers 100% glue-free. (I&J) Install Cinch as shown, approximately 15 inches (375mm) from the top of the loop. You will need to fine-tune this length for your wheel so that there is minimal spring extension when in use. Install the loop end of the tension belt onto the right side tension hook on the wheel. Drape up and over the bobbin’s aluminum brake drum, and then down and around the anchor cleat on the left side of the wheel. Remove any slack as you thread the tension belt back through the other side of the Cinch. (K&L) If you would like a lighter tension, you can create a tension belt with a spring, in the same fashion as the Standard tension belt. Top: Magpie Standard Tension - Bottom: Magpie Art Tension Falcon Tension Belt Materials Kevlar 1 mm Spring or Elastic Cinch (3d printed) Super Glue Tie the length of spare Kevlar to the closed wire loop side of the spring. (A&B) With sharp scissors, cut the excess off the belt. Hold excess taut across the blade of the scissors to aid with cutting. (C) Measure 15 inches (380mm) overall length from the top of the spring and cut the kevlar using the same technique as above. Apply a small amount of super glue (or beeswax) to this cut end to prevent fraying. When applying super glue, do so in between bits of paper towel to blot excess glue and lessen the chances of getting glue on your fingers. Then quickly roll the end firmly between your fingers to form the end into more of a point. Consider wearing rubber gloves to keep your fingers 100% glue-free. (D&E) Install Cinch, as shown approximately 11 inches (280mm) from the top of the spring. You will need to fine-tune this length for your wheel so that there is minimal spring extension when in use. To create a Ultra-Light Tension use the same instructions, except instead of a spring you’ll tie on an elastic from the spares kit. Top: Falcon Standard Tension - Bottom: Falcon Ultra Light Tension

If there is something wrong with your wheel, please review the following information. Should you need further assistance, please contact support@daedalusspinningwheels.com . Including photos and/or videos can be extremely beneficial for assisting you. All Wheels Wheel is making an unusual noise Check the alignment of your tension anchors and drive belt/motor. Both the tension and drive belts should be vertically aligned (parallel with the rear/face). Make sure that neither belt is caught or rubbing on anything. Adjust Motor Mount and Tension Anchors as needed. Make sure the following are clear of, and not interfering with, the movement of the flyer/bobbin: Orifice Hook Guides (not hitting the bobbin whorls) Tension belt (not rubbing and excess tail out of the way) If the noise persists, please check that the Rear Bearing is seated properly on top of the magnets. Then, if needed: Run the wheel without the orifice reducer (if the wheel has one) Run the wheel without tension on the bobbin Run the wheel without the bobbin Switch out Rear Bearing (using a replacement from your kit) Remove the drive belt and let the motor run without it If you still require assistance with a noise-related issue, please contact support after you’ve tested the above and let us know your findings, which will help us to diagnose the problem. Guides are too difficult to move Guides may be difficult to move at first with a new wheel. However, the more you use your wheel, the better they will move over time. If the problem persists, you can remove the guides and roll up some 80-200 grit sandpaper to enlarge and smooth the inside of the hole on the guides. Guides are too loose Remove the guide and inspect the inside that goes around the flyer arm. Looseness can be caused by a hairline crack. Should this occur, place a small amount of gel super glue into the crack and hold the guide firmly while the glue cures (a rubber band is useful here to hold everything tight while curing). If there is no crack, apply a very thin layer of gel super glue across the inner surface. Do not place it back onto the flyer until the glue has fully cured for at least 24 hours. Wheel is heavily vibrating/walking Ensure that your wheel’s four feet are firmly in place on a level surface—you can gently tweak your wheel to get all four feet flat. If spinning at really high speeds, make sure your guides are in sync and even with each other along both flyer arms. Sometimes the weight of a heavy bobbin will cause the yarn load itself out of balance, so test with an empty bobbin. If this does not help, please contact Daedalus Support. Yarn is snagging on something Check that your guides have the wire loop facing inward toward the bobbin. Also, ensure the wire loop is not rubbing on the bobbin end. Another common place for snags is around the base of the small black hooks on the flyer (for the Sparrow). If the yarn is still snagging, view the yarn from the side as it winds onto the bobbin to see where it appears to be catching. Also, try stopping the wheel when a snag happens, and investigate for snags along the yarn path. Rear magnet came loose Check to see if the magnet is attached to either the Rear Bearing or the other Rear Magnet. To keep it from loosening in the future, use a small amount of gel super glue in the pocket to secure it back into place. (Making sure the magnet’s orientation is opposing the other magnet will help hold it in place while the glue cures.) The seal of the bobbin bearing is missing Check the base of the flyer shaft to see if the missing seal is there. If there, you can simply push the seal back into place. In the worst cases where it continues to pop out, you can add a light smear of super glue around the outer edge of the seal, after it has been reinstalled. Wipe away excess glue with a bit of paper towel. Having take up issues Check the flyer axle to ensure there is a black O-ring at the end of the axle in front of the magnets. This ensures proper distance between the bobbin and the magnets. If this is not there the bobbin will not move freely from the flyer resulting in no take up. The spares kit that comes with the wheel should contain an extra O-ring should you loose the original. Magpie, Starling, and Sparrow The face cup has become dislodged from the face This part is designed to pop off should a fall occur to ensure minimal damage to your wheel. To fix this, you’ll need a 3mm allen key to remove the bolt. If the rubber grommet is not damaged, you can place the rubber grommet back into the face cup. If it is damaged, replace it with the spare in your spares kit and then screw the bolt back in from the top of the face cup. Avoid over-tightening in order to allow the face cup to pivot smoothly and easily. Do not intentionally remove the Face Cup unless instructed to do so by Daedalus Support.
