- Falcons Soaring in November
We are preparing the incubators for a new flock of Falcons with an anticipated flight schedule of November. We have sent out Build emails for the next batch of Falcons from our queue. Emails are sent from Support@daedalusspinningwheels.com. We highly recommend adding this email address to your contacts to help ensure the email doesn't land in spam. If your name is in the list below and you do not see the email please check your spam. L. Rehbein K. Taylor K. Ritchie R. Brazell S. J. Strong S. Pirkle About the Falcon Made from carbon fiber and 3D printed, ABS plastic, the Falcon is a light, Scotch-tensioned electric spinning wheel that is optimized for spinning the finest weights at the absolute highest speeds of any e-spinner on the market — by a wide margin. The Falcon is capable of spinning at 4200 RPM, yet it’s just as comfortable jogging along at 500 RPM. This is a specialty e-spinner created specifically for those who spin thread and cobweb singles on the regular and are looking to do so with the option of production-level speeds. While we love to see our e-spinners out in the world, this is not an entry-point wheel, nor is it the right wheel for everyone. If you’ve maxed out the speed options on your Sparrow or Starling and find yourself waiting for twist to build into your singles while spinning at 100%, this could be the e-spinner for you. Be aware that unlike our other Daedalus models, the Falcon is Scotch-tension driven only, offering the lightest of takeup combined with speeds previously unseen on the electric spinning wheel market. While the unit spins equally well at its lowest speed, it was designed for a specific market of highly experienced users whose requests for this e-spinner piqued our engineering minds into action Cost Breakdown Falcon (without the speed controller) - $900 Speed Controller (required to operate) - $125 Add-ons Extra Bobbin 3 pack (black only) - $90 Motor Extension Cable 3 FT or 6 FT - $23-25 What's Included with your Falcon Purchase *Falcon 3 black bobbins with aluminum brake drums Orifice hook Spares Kit (3mm allen wrench, 1 axle o-ring, 2 chassis bolts, 2 cinches, 1 drive belt, 3 elastics, 1mm Kevlar tension cord,1 rear bearing, 2 rubber feet, 2 rubber grommets, 2 square nuts, 1 small super glue, and 2 tension springs) 15V DC Power Supply Manual *Speed Controller is required to operate your Falcon but must be purchased separately if you do not already have one for a Daedalus e-spinner. - Magpie V2 Update - V2 Pro Art Flyer
Hi everyone! In our last update, we gave a little hint that the Magpie was getting an updated flyer with the new features Dave implemented with the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. We want to thank Suzy and Charan for twisting Dave’s arm until he added the new features to the Magpie’s Art Flyer. Without further ado let me introduce to you the Magpie V2 Pro Art Flyer! V2 Pro Art Flyer? We had a difficult time coming up with a name for the flyer. We didn’t want to call it V3 as Magpie is still Version 2. This flyer however takes Magpie to a whole new level of art spinning. Due to the vast improvements of the yarn path and ease of use, we have decided to call this the V2 Pro Art Flyer. As with the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer one of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. Like Starling’s Art Flyer, this new Magpie Art Flyer uses open metal bars for its shoulders and guides instead of enclosed loops, which helps achieve both of these goals. Specifications Magpie V2 Pro Art Flyer Product Details Dimension : 15"L x 8.5"W x 11"H (38x21x28cm) Weight : 5.7 lbs (2.6 kg) Tension : Scotch or Irish Orifice : 32mm with a 20mm Reducer Bobbin Capacity : 48+oz bobbin (plying into worsted etc. Art yarns are less dense so bobbin capacity is also less. The Magpie V2 Pro Art Flyer can be used with BOTH the Magpie V1 and Magpie V2! Please note that the Kevlar tension belt can only be used on aluminum drums. If using tension on a plastic whorl bobbin or flyer of the earliest V1 models, you will need to use the nylon rat tail tension instead. Cost and What comes with the Magpie V2 Pro Art Flyer Kit? We will be having a Rhinebeck special this year for the Magpie. You or your proxy buyer must be present at Rhinebeck to receive this special bundle price. Limited supplies will be available. First come first serve (no preorders). Rhinebeck Starling V3FP Bundle - $1,980 ($100 off) Magpie V2 Body (Includes Speed Controller) V2 Pro Art Flyer Kit (Includes 3 Art Bobbins) V2 Standard Flyer Kit (Includes 3 Standard Bobbins) Starling Art Flyer Vs Magpie Art Flyer If you are contemplating between selecting a Starling Art Flyer and the Magpie Art Flyer for art yarn and you’re stuck on your choice, there are several things to consider. First is the orifice size, second the capacity, and third the motor torque. These factors are important and will help you determine which flyer will accommodate the quantity of yarn you want to spin and the gauge at which you choose to spin it. Do you intend to use the wheel for production scale spinning? The Magpie is likely your best bet. Or, maybe you aren’t a production spinner but you enjoy spinning an art yarn that volumetrically takes up a lot of space on a bobbin, like beehives or supercoils. Magpie adds the ability to spin larger yarn structures with its huge orifice size, and the ability to store more of it on a bobbin. Magpie’s powerful motor setup provides much more torque, which is useful for the professional spinner who needs large art yarn skeins finished in the shortest time. Magpie was designed with a “no holds barred” type of mentality, making it the best on the market for the heaviest and wildest art yarns. Again, if you need a large amount of space then the Magpie is a better option. However, if you want to dip your toes into the world of art yarns, and want to learn the techniques involved, then Starling may be the wheel for you. The same design features that make Magpie’s Art Flyer so capable, were scaled down to be included in the new Starling Art Flyer, just in a slightly smaller, lighter, and less expensive package. Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer Magpie Art Flyer Orifice Size 20mm 32mm with a 20mm Reducer Capacity 3-3.5 oz 12-14 oz Motors 1 2 Wheel Weight 2.7 lbs (1.2 kg) 5.7 lbs (2.6 kg) Wheel Dimensions 10" L x 6.5 W x 9.5" H (25x16.5x24 cm) 15"L x 8.5"W x 11"H (38x21x28cm) Stay tuned for our next upcoming blog with information on Rhinebeck! - Team Daedalus
- Starling V3/V3FP Update - Art Flyer
Hi everyone! I'm excited to be able to share with you all Dave's latest creation the Starling V3/V3FP ART FLYER! We want to thank Laura K for urging us to explore the idea of an Art Flyer for the Starling. Why An Art Flyer for Starling? Starling V3/V3FP was conceived to be our “all around” spinning wheel, capable of processing the widest range of yarns that would satisfy the vast majority of our clients. The ultra lightweight design lends itself very well towards the light end of that spectrum, with the standard flyer easily capable of lace finer than 100 wraps per inch (WPI). Since fine yarns is what Daedalus designs do best, we recently came up with a Lace Flyer for Starling V3/V3FP, extending its ability well into embroidery threads in the 200+ WPI range. However, it was recently pointed out to us that most of our wheels lean towards these finer yarns, and the only true Art Flyer was built for the mighty Magpie. But this is our flagship production spinner, and thus leaves the vast majority of our customers without a good option for art yarns. So, in an effort to stay faithful to the original design goal of a wheel to please everyone, and with the broadest spinning range available in mind. Dave went back to the drawing board with a fresh vision and created the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. One of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. The flyer shoulders and guides now use an open metal bars instead of enclosed loops, which help achieve both of these goals. This new feature has actually surpassed our expectations, with testers noting how easily and fluidically the yarn gets onto the bobbin. In addition, It uses the same bobbins as the Starling Standard Flyer, giving the spinner approximately 3-3.5 oz of capacity for bulky yarns. While this capacity may not be tailored to the extensive production of art yarn, it is just right for the hobbyist. Whether you are experimenting or testing out fresh ideas that you may wish to explore before embarking on a larger project, the Starling Art Flyer gives you options not previously available to this model. With all three flyers—the Lace, Standard, and Art—the Starling becomes the spinner's perfect class wheel. Offering a world of unlimited possibilities while learning and exploring the art of spinning. Specifications Starling V3FP Product Details with Art Flyer Dimension : 10" L x 6.5 W x 9.5" H (25x16.5x24 cm) Weight : 2.7 lbs (1.2 kg) Tension : Scotch or Irish Orifice : 20 mm Bobbin : 12+ oz Capacity of 30 WPI singles (when using Standard Flyer). Art yarns are less dense so bobbin capacity is also less. Our testers were able to fit 3-3.5 oz of bulkier yarns onto the bobbin. Compatibility Starling V3? The Starling Art flyer can be used with BOTH the Starling V3 and V3FP! Please note that the Kevlar tension belt can only be used on aluminum drums. If using tension on a plastic whorl bobbin or flyer of the earliest V3 models, you will need to use the nylon rat tail tension instead. Cost and What comes with the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer? Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer - $380 USD This flyer is an Extra Add-on purchase only. All Starling V3FPs come with the Standard Flyer and 3 Standard bobbins as the basic package. The Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer includes: Art Flyer in black Tension Kit 2 Rear Bearings One pair of flyer guides in black 2 drive belts (1 Scotch and 1 Irish) Starling Art Flyer uses the same bobbins as the Standard Flyer, the Art Flyer does not come with bobbins of its own (This is our way of reducing cost to our flock members). Please note that Kevlar Tension should only be used on aluminum drums. Release Date The Starling V3 Art Flyer will be released at the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck on October 19th . We will be having a Rhinebeck special this year for the Starling. When we sent the Starling Art Flyer prototypes to our testers—who happen to be some of the most skilled art yarn spinners out there—they were absolutely delighted with the design and functionality. One of their first suggestions collectively was to upgrade the Magpie with these fabulous designs. With this invaluable feedback, Dave began to upgrade the Magpie Art Flyer, which is now in testing. We are pleased to announce that a new version of the Magpie Art Flyer will be released in tandem with the Starling Art Flyer. - Tips & Tricks: Is Cross-Lacing Necessary?
We've been seeing a lot of photos posted with our wheels that display cross-lacing and while there are some benefits for this for other non Daedalus wheels we wanted to address that Daedalus wheels have been designed in a way to not need the benefits that cross lacing can provide. The major reason for cross-lacing is to reduce tension and to aid in winding more evenly. For those that feel that cross lacing is necessary Evanita and James have provided the below information that you may find beneficial to improve your spinning experience. Evanita's Tips and Tricks for Winding Even Bobbins I get asked a lot, do you use some sort of device to get such beautifully even bobbins or maybe fairies or gnomes that move the hook for you? Truth be told I move the hooks all by myself and it’s not always perfect but I do strive for perfectly wound bobbins, their beauty always brings me a smile. So how do I achieve this? Get to Know Your Bobbins Whenever I use a wheel I’m not used to, getting to know how to fill it takes some time. I usually have to be a lot more observant of what I’m doing to make sure I move the hooks as needed. Once you know your wheel and bobbin better for how you like to spin, you’ll have a better idea of how often you need to move the hook without having to pay too much attention to your bobbin. Moving Your Guides How often you move the guide and by how much, is dependent upon what you are spinning. If you are spinning fine your movements of the guide will be very small. The thicker your yarn, the farther you’ll need to move your guide. How often you have to move your guide will depend on how fast the bobbin is filling. As you move away from the core, the bobbin will fill slower and become easier to keep even. Wheel Positioning Being able to see your bobbin is extremely important. With my Daedalus Wheels I find that placing them at an angle where I can view the bobbin from the side can help me keep better tabs on how the bobbin is looking. Depending on the set up I also like to position the wheel slightly lower so I can also view the bobbin a bit from above. How to Wind Your Layers When loading your bobbin, load back to front, back to front. This allows you to always see the edge of your new layer as it moves towards you. When a layer is moving away from you, it can be harder to see when it’s time to move your hook. The added benefit to this is, when you move your hook from the very front to the very back it creates what I think of as a safety line that runs all the way across the bobbin. If you lose your single for any reason you can use this line to help you find it. Dealing with Unevenness Oh no, I have some unevenness in my layer! It happens and, if you aren’t too picky, you can let it go and fix it on the next layer. If I feel the need to fix it, I butterfly the singles off the bobbin and then wind the flyer by hand to even out the bit that formed the bump. Plying Builds Up Fast Even after you’ve mastered evenly winding your bobbins, plying can always be extra tricky. Your bobbins fill up much faster and it’s not as convenient to pause, unwind and rewind. It’s ok to let those first few layers be a bit wonky, you can even the bobbin out after those layers by spending less time on the hills and more time in the valleys. So why go through all this trouble just for a pretty bobbin? Why not use a tool to do this for you? For me, I love the way my bobbins look when wound this way, but I also find that the little moments in which I pause and do something different give my body a different motion. Doing the same repetitive motions over a long period of time can be really harsh on your body, so I find taking the time to move my hook helps mix things up. I also will take the opportunity every so often to check my single against my WPI card to ensure that I’m on track with my project’s goal. Taking these little moments to make sure your spin is looking exactly how you want it to look will help your consistency especially over longer projects. For some, pausing to move the hook is an annoyance, but I find joy in the moments when I pause my spinning to move my hook. Getting Light Takeup Without Cross-Lacing By James Perry When we spin, sometimes we find that even if we slacken our brake band as much as possible, we still can’t quite get the takeup as low as we want. The takeup itself is facilitated by a number of factors including the weight of the flyer and bobbin, the bobbin bearings, braking materials (both the drum and the band), and how easily the bobbin is able to change speed. To alter takeup, we need to be able to alter one of these other factors. We cannot typically change bearings or the size and weight of the flyer, so what CAN we do? The Downsides of Cross-Lacing Many times, spinners will say to cross lace, meaning, to add an extra fulcrum or pivot point to the yarn by running it over the arm not in use, or around the hooks of the other arm before the arm from which the yarn is wound onto the bobbin. I do not recommend this as a reliable option. Lighter takeup usually means fine yarns, and cross lacing will invariably cause the yarn to drag over the yarn package on the bobbin, or the bobbin core. This adds extra, unnecessary friction and wear onto fine singles which can cause more breakages. It can also disrupt the organisation of the fibers in the singles, which may not be ideal especially If you have taken the time to comb your fiber to give you a worsted yarn. The question is, if cross lacing isn’t a good idea, what CAN you do? There are 3 main options – opt for a smaller flyer and bobbin, change your brake band for something thinner, or pad the core of your bobbin, if not a mix of these approaches. Choice of Flyer Changing the flyer assembly for a smaller lace flyer also signifies decreasing the weight and aerodynamic drag of the assembly, which as discussed, will help decrease the takeup. In addition, with the Daedalus wheels, flyers like the Starling lace flyer and the Falcon have inbuilt aerodynamic couplers to help decrease the takeup even more. Tension Band Changing the tension band for a thinner band gives less surface area between the band and the bobbin. Less surface area typically means less friction between the band and the braking drum, hence for an equivalent taughtness of band, a lighter takeup is achieved. With enough tension, you can still achieve a heavier takeup, but you will find the window of adjustment between zero and this point is drastically increased, allowing for much easier fine tuning especially at the lower end. Padding the Core Padding the core simply means increasing the diameter of the bobbin core. The ideal way to do this is to add something to “fatten” the core of the bobbin without increasing the weight significantly. For this, I personally favour a length of pool noodle or pipe insulation as it's typically very lightweight. Padding the core works by decreasing the force exerted on the singles (the physics of which I won’t go into here). You will decrease the capacity of your bobbin, but for fine yarns and given the larger capacity of Daedalus bobbins, this is typically not a problem. With a Falcon or Starling lace bobbin, you may also find that you do not need this strategy, as these bobbins already have a fatter core than other wheels like the Starling, Magpie, Sparrow, and Martin. This is more aimed at the aforementioned four wheels. In reality, many people will use one or more of these approaches. You can mix and match as you want to tune your wheel to get the yarn you want. I advise trying each individually and then deciding which works for you. For more helpful information check out our Tips & Tricks section of the blog. - Tips & Tricks - Daedalus Battery V4
Our newest battery the Daedalus Battery V4 is our easiest battery to use to date. However it does have a few tricks up its sleeve. The Cable This cable is a special one and no other cable should be used to connect your battery to your speed controller(or wheel in the case of Martin). This cable ensures that 15 volts is being transferred from the battery to your wheel. The Cable will draw power from the battery even if the cable is not plugged into the speed controller. When not in use please make sure the cable is unplugged from both the speed controller and the battery. The Extra USB Port On the Daedalus Battery V3 if the wheel was not drawing enough power it would automatically shut off. To remedy this we provided a USB light with the battery to ensure enough power was being drawn. The Daedalus Battery V4 does not require this, in fact no other items should be plugged into the battery while operating your wheel. If other items are plugged in this was disengage the power going to the wheel. Should this occur you will need to unplug all cables from the battery as well as unplug the cord to the speed controller. After everything is unplugged, you can then use the special cable to connect your battery and speed controller. The Power Button The Daedalus V4 Battery has some special features depending on how many times you press the power button. Tap Two Times - Low Power Mode Tap Three Times - Battery Reboot When in Low Power Mode the battery percentage number will rotate. While in this mode the battery will not provide enough power to the wheel which will result in the wheel going slow. If you notice this please make sure you exit Low Power Mode Should you accidentally enter Low Power Mode follow these steps Press your Speed Controller to Pause the Wheel Set your Speed Controller switch to Neutral Double Tap the Power button on your battery (when you do this the speed controller will power off) Once you've double tapped the power button the number on the battery screen should stop rotating but the speed controller will still be off. * Unplug the Speed Controller and then plug it back in (if power doesn't resume to speed controller unplug cable from battery as well and then plug everything back up) Once you've completed these steps you should be able to resume spinning. * when the power cuts off on the speed controller while still being plugged in it will after a period of time power back on. Please make sure when you are not wanting to operate the wheel that your speed controller switch is always in the neutral position. If you are stopping your spin session or briefly walking away please unplug the battery cable from the battery and speed controller If you press the power button three times it will state 188 and the battery will reboot.
