Hi everyone! In our last update, we gave a little hint that the Magpie was getting an updated flyer with the new features Dave implemented with the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. We want to thank Suzy and Charan for twisting Dave’s arm until he added the new features to the Magpie’s Art Flyer. Without further ado let me introduce to you the Magpie V2 Pro Art Flyer!
V2 Pro Art Flyer?
We had a difficult time coming up with a name for the flyer. We didn’t want to call it V3 as Magpie is still Version 2. This flyer however takes Magpie to a whole new level of art spinning. Due to the vast improvements of the yarn path and ease of use, we have decided to call this the V2 Pro Art Flyer.
As with the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer one of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. Like Starling’s Art Flyer, this new Magpie Art Flyer uses open metal bars for its shoulders and guides instead of enclosed loops, which helps achieve both of these goals.

Starling Art Flyer Vs Magpie Art Flyer
If you are contemplating between selecting a Starling Art Flyer and the Magpie Art Flyer for art yarn and you’re stuck on your choice, there are several things to consider. First is the orifice size, second the capacity, and third the motor torque. These factors are important and will help you determine which flyer will accommodate the quantity of yarn you want to spin and the gauge at which you choose to spin it.
Do you intend to use the wheel for production scale spinning? The Magpie is likely your best bet. Or, maybe you aren’t a production spinner but you enjoy spinning an art yarn that volumetrically takes up a lot of space on a bobbin, like beehives or supercoils. Magpie adds the ability to spin larger yarn structures with its huge orifice size, and the ability to store more of it on a bobbin. Magpie’s powerful motor setup provides much more torque, which is useful for the professional spinner who needs large art yarn skeins finished in the shortest time. Magpie was designed with a “no holds barred” type of mentality, making it the best on the market for the heaviest and wildest art yarns. Again, if you need a large amount of space then the Magpie is a better option.
However, if you want to dip your toes into the world of art yarns, and want to learn the techniques involved, then Starling may be the wheel for you. The same design features that make Magpie’s Art Flyer so capable, were scaled down to be included in the new Starling Art Flyer, just in a slightly smaller, lighter, and less expensive package.
