- The Now and Future Daedalus
Happy New Year! Daedalus has grown a lot since we first started with the Blackbird in October of 2018. Since then we have developed 10 wheels and starting this year two winding tools, the Roly-Poly and Whirligig. We are so fortunate to have such a loyal and wonderfully supportive community. You have all helped inspire us to continue innovating and developing new ideas. With our current wait times for our wheels along with the expansion into the Roly-Poly and Whirligig, we’ve had some who are concerned about how this will affect wait times going forward. Rest assured this has been at the forefront of our minds as well. We have known that we need to expand but doing so is a delicate process and can have growing pains that can slow things down before things get better. Over the past year, we have made great strides in getting ready for expansion. We are looking forward to Daedalus spreading its wings and adding some much-needed trusted hands to ensure the continued quality we all know and love in Daedalus. We have already expanded our print farm extensively over the past year. At the present moment we have 6 Prusa Mk3s, 2 Prusa Mini, 6 Raise 3D E2, and at the end of the year we added 6 Bambu X1C with another 6 Bambus on the way! The new Bambu printers will be dedicated to printing Roly-Polies and Whirligigs. While the Raise make wheels and the Prusa print bobbins. As it stands we have a staff that works fabulously together. So finding new people to join the Daedalus family was not an easy task. Rebecca and Evanita run a tight ship with an eye to detail. Rebecca is busy behind the scenes managing the company and building wheels in her spare time. Evanita is not just her right hand but her right arm, handling all things computer related as well as graphic design, photography, customer service, and generally helps keep things organized. As if that wasn’t enough she will now be building control modules and those extension cables you all love so much. David has recently been designing but the fun new task for him has been, teaching and mentoring, as he begins to train some new blood here at Daedalus. Over the last year, we've been training Jennifer Hendrix, whom some of you may already know from the fiber community. Jenn is a native of Michigan & has lived in the Greenville area of South Carolina with her husband, Will, for 13 years. Jenn started her fiber arts journey nearly 20 years ago and loves to spin, knit, and weave. She is also a novice woodturner and loves spending time in the Smoky Mountains in her MINI. Jenn has 2 grown-up daughters & 3 grandkids. (If you visit our Saturday night Zooms, you may have ‘met’ Jenn & her youngest grandson.) Jenn has recently been learning fabrication and apprenticing to build Wheels, Roly-Polies, and Whirligigs. In addition to Jenn, we are apprenticing a close family friend Katherine Wallace. Known to us as Katie, she, like Dave, is a native of Kentucky. She is an avid gardener and loves her animals, which include a dog, 3 cats, and several chickens. But her number one love is her husband Neil and daughter Lillian. Katie has been apprenticing to assemble Wheels as well as Roly-Polies and Whirligigs. Both Jenn and Katie will be at the Opening dinner at the Fly-In for those interested in meeting the new team members. Our goal for Daedalus going forward and the reason for our apprenticeships are to reduce the waitlist. We want to get to a point where we will have wheels in stock with no wait unless it’s a custom order. We will still offer completely custom Starlings (meaning you pick the body and trim color) on a waitlist, however black bodies with colored trim and colored bodies with black trim will be in stock and ready to ship. Magpies and Falcons will be basically the same as Starlings except their bodies are always black so once the waitlist has been met for these models we will have them in stock and ready to ship. We also intend to up the output of Sparrows so hopefully, we can meet the demand enough to have those in stock regularly and ready to ship. The expansion doesn’t stop there. We intend to add a couple more wheels to the lineup in the next few years as well as several other Fiber related tools. We plan to expand the print farm further at the end of 2023 or early 2024. So stay tuned and buckle up, things may seem crazy here but we are thrilled and between Becca and Evanita, things are under control. - Team Daedalus
- New Bobbins for Your Birds
Happy New Year from Team Daedalus! We have been diligently working on our wheels and winders, and thanks to this our queues are shorter than ever. This allows us time to reflect on old projects and design new ones. There are always so many things we’d love to make possible, such as new patterns and colors for bobbins, but as you all know there just aren't enough hours in the day. For this reason, we’ve decided to mentor a member of our flock as he spreads his wings and becomes the new maker to watch in the industry. Those of you who attend our Saturday Zoom may already know him. This person shows tremendous promise. He’s already very familiar with our product line, as he owns many of our designs. He’s a problem solver, an innovator, and an all-around great guy. We are proud to introduce the designs of FiberFox Workshop, the brainchild of Brian Holmen. We at Daedalus have been listening to you (the flock) about your desire for colored bobbins, specifically for Sparrows. The sad reality for us is, time is in short supply and printer loads are high, so we started to discuss other options. Brian had come to our attention during our Saturday spin-ins on Zoom. We watched him grow as a designer working on props for his theater group and were always very impressed by his attention to detail. So naturally when the demand for colored Sparrow bobbins reached a deafening roar, we looked to Brian, and boy did he deliver. To start off with, Brian’s design studio, FiberFox Workshop, will be offering 4 bobbin patterns in 10 of your favorite colors for the Daedalus Sparrow spinning wheel. These bobbins will be of the same quality you all know and love from Daedalus. That means the filament, bearings, and aluminum drums are all Daedalus sourced. Brian has worked with Dave extensively to perfect his designs and assembly techniques to meet our rigorous standards. Patterns Available Colors In addition to providing Sparrow bobbins, Brian has also developed a way to allow bobbin rewinding on the Daedalus Martin! Just like Dave, he keeps a close tabs on the community, and as soon as he saw someone mention they wished they could rewind bobbins on the Martin, his brain went into overdrive. Grabbing his digital calipers and his Martin, he had a working prototype that Dave and some of his testers were able to use that very same day. Evanita has been eager to share her experiences and photos with the community ever since. Ok, my Lovely Flock members grab a pen and some paper I’m going to give you all the details now so you can FLY (that’s right don’t walk or crawl) over to his website to check things out. - End of the Year State of the Flock
Happy Holidays, my friends. I can’t believe it’s this time of year again, it has come back around so quickly. But what a great time of year, a time to celebrate with family and friends. As well as a time to look back on the great year we’ve had and all the new people we met. I’d like to take a second to thank everyone who has stood by us and supported us over the years, we honestly and literally can’t do this without you and we want you to know we appreciate you. Again happy holidays whichever holiday of the season that may be for you and a healthy new year. Today Dec 15, 2023, at 11:59 pm EST the shop will close for 2 weeks for end-of-the-year inventory and bookkeeping. Shipping will continue until Dec 20 (our last ship-out before the holiday break). Shipping will resume in the new year when the shop reopens Jan. 1, 2024, at 12:00 am EST. When the shop opens on January 1st you will be able to purchase a battery, they are now officially in my hands, I just couldn’t get them into the inventory before our break. Sorry about that but again on Jan 1, they will be ready to ship. Looking Back on 2023 The past year has been crazy busy. At the beginning of the year, we released Roly-Poly and Whirligig, with great success. We have been thrilled with both the ease of use and the design of both products. We will continue to hustle to make as many as possible in the new year. Dave and Becca have been building like mad, and the additions to the team of Jenn and Katie in the beginning of the year have allowed us to really reduce the waiting time in the queue. At present, we have a wait time of 6 months or less on both the Magpie and Starling queues. When not building for updates or queue wheels Becca and Dave have been able to do a couple of festivals. This year was our second year at Maryland Sheep and Wool. Becca and Jenn had so much fun this year, please come and see us in Maryland, on May 4 & 5, 2024 in barn 4, booth 2 & 4. In October we were lucky enough to be in the New York Sheep and Wool Festival for the first time, and WOW, what a ride it was. Dave, Becca, Jenn, and our incredible friend Karen took the long drive from Kentucky to New York to enjoy the festival and man the booth. Ohhh, the apple cider doughnuts were everything I'd hoped they’d be. But the best part of the weekend was meeting all the new people and getting to hug all the people I recognized from other shows. Come by the booth at Rhinebeck in 2024 and give me a hug, we will be in barn 36 booth 18. What's in Store for 2024? Well, we’re not ready to say any more than this but, keep your eyes and ears open, we are in a design phase, there is something special on the horizon. When posting to social media please make sure to tag us @DaedalusSpinningWheels and #daedalusspinningwheels so we can see what you are working on. Jenny Arnold absolutely stunned us with her shawl. Jenny specializes in 1927 Breed Standard Shetland. Jenny started this project back in February of 2022 with three colors of Shetland: white, light gray, and black. Starting with fleece and being able to process it by hand let her have full control of the colors and how they blended together. All the yarn was spun on her Falcon. The finished yarn was knitted into an incredible 6 ft square lace shawl. The finished project is something we had to share with you all. We can't wait to see what https://www.instagram.com/jennyarnold8154/ Emily Witte never disappoints not only with her spinning, but also with her knitting. Both bright and cheery, her spinning always makes me smile. And she chooses the cutest patterns. But wait there’s more, Emily is also an incredible mentor, nurturing a now rather large spinning group in Wisconsin. Big shout out to all the lovely people joining her for their weekly spin in. To see more fibery shenanigans check out Emily , Amber , and Jean Marie 's IG accounts. Laura Linneman has been spinning up a prolific amount of yarn on her starling v3 for an amazing article in PLY Magazine ’s Sweater issue which is available right now. If you don’t have it, log in to ply online and purchase a copy, you’ll love her article. https://simplecirc.com/ply-magazine/item/9639/the-sweater-issue-43 In October Jillian Moreno added an Ultra-Violet Reactive Orange Martin to her flock and she immediately took it to the Lambtown Festival in California. I foresee lots of beautiful yarn and many happy students in their future. For Jillian’s class schedule check out her website. http://www.jillianmoreno.com/ Jay has been busy spinning a beautiful braid by inglenook fibers in the Bordeaux colorway on his Starling V3FP. Once finished he did what he does best and wove the yarn. Please check out his weaving studio on his website for more gorgeous pieces. https://www.roguewovens.com/ Debbie Held has had a busy year of teaching, writing, spinning, and weaving. Debbie spun these beautiful beige singles on her Falcon and Magpie to be woven up and sewn by Astrid for the Drape Issue of Ply Magazine. - Daedalus Fly-In Retreat 2024 Teacher Spotlight - Jill Duarte
Before we dive into our next teacher spotlight we'd like to remind everyone that the deadline for signing up for the Daedalus Fly-In is December 1st! All classes still have some room in them with the closest ones to filling being the classes by Esther Rodgers. Now onto our final teacher spotlight. Jill Duarte is a dyer, a spinner, an equipment aficionado, a fleece sniffer, a former academic and an unabashed fiber nerd. Jill is one half of the duo behind HipStrings and spends their days geeking out about all things fiber, diving into the nuances of fiber preparation, color, and the act of spinning. Since picking up spinning over a decade ago, and then starting HipStrings, Jill has taken an approach to spinning that is grounded in a technical approach married to historical context and a lot of curiosity as to how things work. In other words, they read all the books and tried all the things and made lots of mistakes so that you don’t necessarily have to. As an instructor, Jill excels in explaining the “Why?” of spinning, whether it’s exploring the relationship between fibers and spinning techniques, the physics of handspinning and the tools we use for spinning, or providing insight in how to make something work for you. Jill challenges students to try fibers new to them, explore novel fiber blends and techniques, revisit things they’ve tried before and to step out of their comfort zones in order to expand their horizons as spinners. Jill’s workshops for the Deadalus Fly-In are focused on encouraging spinners to try new fibers and learn more about the wide, wild, and wonderful world of fiber through a framework of fiber structure and characteristics. With the information presented, students should leave with the confidence to explore new fibers, to seek out new challenges and fiber blends, to boldly go where no spinner has gone before. Classes So Many Different Fibers Out There, How Do I Choose? Full-Day $30 materials fee Hand spinners have access to an extremely wide range of available fibers for hand spinning, so how are you supposed to make informed choices about what fibers are suitable for the project you have in mind or which fibers you might enjoy spinning? In this workshop, we will discuss a simple method for the categorization of spinning fibers that will enable you to acquire fiber you enjoy spinning and create handspun yarn you’ll want to use. We will discuss how fibers behave when spun alone versus when included in a blend and how to characterize fibers based on staple length, crimp and structure. How to pair fiber preps and dyeing methods to your desired handspun yarns will also be discussed. Students will sample a variety of fibers including different wool breeds, camelid fibers, silks, viscose, and a variety of plant fibers. Level of Spinning: Participants should be able to spin and ply independently Students should bring: A spinning wheel in good working condition Extra bobbins Notebook Lazy Kate Niddy Noddy Supplies Provided by Instructor: a Fiber Sampler containing 4 different wool breeds, alpaca, silks, viscose and several cellulose fibers, notebook. Fiber Speed Dating 3 hours $25 materials fee Explore nine different fiber blends while discussing approaches to spinning different fibers - which drafting methods pair well with particular fiber preps or blends? Should you judge a fiber by your first impression? We will discuss worsted and woolen drafting methods and how they relate to the fiber you spin. Fiber blends will include a variety of different wools, silks, flax, viscose and luxury fibers such as yak, camel and cashmere. Level of Spinning: Participants should be able to spin and ply independently. Students should bring: A spinning wheel in good working condition Extra bobbins Notebook Lazy Kate Niddy Noddy Supplies Provided by Instructor: a Fiber Sampler containing 9 different fiber blends - 1/2 ounce of each blend, notebook. - Our First Rhinebeck!
We came, we saw, we ate apple cider doughnuts, and are now home safely. Yes, I’m talking about Rhinebeck and it was wonderful. Firstly, we want to thank everyone who purchased and also everyone who just came by to say hi, we love and appreciate you all!!!! We had fabulous booth neighbors Jennie Blue Ceramics @jenniebluevermont, Browder’s Birds @browdersbirds, Flying Fibers @flyingfibers, and Maple Row Stock and Wool, it was great to meet you all. To Jenn Hendrix @gynnspun, Katie Wallace, and Karen Hoffman @karen_the_hoff you are both above and beyond friends and family to us, we could not have run this booth without you both!!!!! We are extremely grateful that New York Sheep and Wool @nysheepwool was able to find room for us at the last minute, we had an absolute blast and can’t wait until next year. This was our first year attending and it was so much fun. We stayed at a house in Lake Katrine, it was lovely, and we ate a ton of great food, oh those apple cider doughnuts (they require a second nod). We immensely enjoyed the beautiful leaf colors and the brisk fall mornings. We met a ton of new people and were thrilled to see many returning faces. A quick shout-out to Thomas Victor @thomasvictor82, Robin Ashcroft Hall @robinhallwrites, Maurice Ribble @dreamingrobots, Amanda Anganes @classysquidfiberco, and Mrs. Woodland Woodworking @thewoodlandpixie, just to name a few, there were so many others I’d like to personally thank but the list is huge. Below are a series of pics from our experiences at Rhinebeck from packing in Lexington to the drive home and everything in between. Finally, we are wishing all our new birdie owners peaceful spinning! We look forward to seeing photos of your spinning journey together. For all of our new winder owners, we look forward to seeing the beautiful yarns you wind onto these machines. We hope to see many of you at our Daedalus Fly-In Electric Spinning Retreat next February! Please tag us (@daedaluspinningwheels and #daedalusspinningwheels) on your social media posts.
