  • Daedalus Fly-In Retreat Update!

Hi all! It’s June, and that means it's time to open the request forms for the retreat on the Daedalus Fly-In website. Here is a direct link to the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf-LoBS7014Omb3pAuhdhU3vTb64O2CTxihG0vpyLGxupJPvw/viewform The request form will open on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. EDT USA. The request form will be open for 1 month, at which time I will begin invoicing people. We at Daedalus have been blessed by our community in that when we open a new project there is quite a bit of interest. Due to this fact, I expect many more requests than tickets (to answer that question, I have 75 spots). I will be choosing names from a queue using a random number generator if more than 75 requests come in, which is very likely. This seems to be the best way to ensure anyone can come, regardless of technological issues. (Numbers will be assigned according to order of request, but there is no benefit from being early on the list.) The Fly-In will open Wednesday, March 1, 2023 with a welcoming dinner from 6-10 p.m. , followed by classes Thursday the 2nd through Saturday the 4th. There will also be a vendor market Friday and Saturday, with departure from the event Sunday morning the 5th of March, 2023. The event is being hosted at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott in Lexington, Kentucky. This is a great hotel with a spa and a PGA-rated golf course. I would like to request that you stay at the hotel. Rooms are single occupancy. To be as candid and honest as possible (and we all know honesty is the best policy, right?) I have a room block that must be filled in order for the retreat to go on to a second year. This is a community-building project and for that reason, it must be self-sufficient. The room rate is great ($145 USD per night). Please take advantage of it. Please email me with any questions: Rebecca@daedalusflyin.com The cost of attendance is separate from the hotel fees. This retreat attendance fee is $600 USD. The price includes the welcoming dinner Wednesday, 3 classes over 3 days, a private lounge, a Friday and Saturday vendor market, nightly events, as well for after-hours fun. On the Google request form there are class choices for your first, second, and third choices. For teachers this year we will have Jillian Moreno, Charan Sachar, Debbie Held, and James Perry. Please read up on our class offerings as there have been some minor changes. https://www.daedalusflyin.com/classes I will assign classes this year. (The second year will most likely be different.) Everyone will get 3 classes—one class each day of the retreat. My goal is to get everyone all 3 first-choice classes. However, this might not be possible, and we appreciate your understanding. Classes are 3 hours long and taught by hand-selected instructors. Materials fees will be listed on the website and are not included in the price of the retreat. Fees must be paid in cash directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. An email will be sent to you with your class list once the schedule is complete, so you can prepare for the fee and tool requirements. You will not go into this blind; I promise. And lastly, this will be a fully vaccinated event. I’m sorry if this upsets people, but it is necessary for everyone’s safety. I will allow doctor note exemptions which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, as everyone’s health is unique and so are their situations. We strive to make this the most accessible event possible. Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding as we work through organizing our very first retreat! -Becca

  • All About the Queues

Hi All. There have been some questions recently about the wait-list queue, and we would like to address how it works to help everyone have a better understanding. We can appreciate that everyone is excited to get their new wheel, so please allow us to explain how we operate. First I should say we have 4 wheel models and 3 queues. The sparrows have been in such demand that a queue for them has been impossible. In addition to the queues, we have festivals this year for the first time in 2 years, which complicates things. Originally the idea was to spend 2 weeks on each model in succession and then start all over again. The reality is that the 3 queues are not even in their numbers so rotating between the queues evenly does not work very efficiently. This means some wheel queues may move faster than others. Therefore, knowing your locating number on the queue that you chose, doesn’t necessarily give an accurate picture of how long it will be until your wheel will be built. This is why we don’t take any money until we are printing and building your wheel, which is within 30 days of shipping out. David and I are the only people building these wheels. We do not have a factory or other employees, save Evanita who does the web and social aspects of the business. So while the print farm is chugging away the number of wheels built is limited to what 2 pairs of hands can do. We do not plan to hire anyone at this time. We like the hands-on aspect and the ability to ensure that the wheels are of the highest quality and to our standards, which is very hard to impart to employees. If you were to join the lists today you will be waiting a minimum of a year. In addition, every time we attend a festival the list grows exponentially, which is why we state a minimum of a year. It is entirely possible that you will be waiting longer than this, but due to the dynamic nature of the lists again, it’s hard to accurately stipulate a true wait time. If you do wish to go ahead and put yourself on one of our waitlists, you can do so as follows. For Starling V3FP, Magpie V2, and Falcon you simply go to the pages associated with that wheel, and at the bottom of the page, there is a link to the google request form. You will not get a confirmation, but your name is on the list and the list is in the order that people signed up. If you signed up for a wheel and the model has been upgraded since you signed up, you will automatically get the newest model. When building is set to commence on a given model emails will be sent out and a post on social media will be put up with first names and last initials to inform you that we are beginning a batch. Once we have received a reply to our email and confirmed your order you will be invoiced. We understand that everyone would like an estimated date for their wheel, which is really the question behind the “What number am I” question. And we are sorry that we cannot give a firm answer. There was a period of time when we made the waitlists public, but we had to make it private after receiving constant harassing and threatening emails. After making it private, we did answer every email inquiry. However, we no longer can respond to the increased volume of emails inquiring about waitlist position or expected delivery times. For this, we apologize. But we would be happy to answer any other questions about the purchase of your wheel; please contact support@daedalusspinningwheels.com with any and all concerns. Please do not private message us these questions as these messages can get lost very easily in the higher volumes we are experiencing this year. And we would like to thank all of you, for how much our business has grown in such a short time. We truly feel that we are blessed, and will work our hardest to provide the best products and support that we can. Please follow us on Instagram or our Facebook Group for the latest updates and announcements. Thanks B, D, & E

  • Sparrow Migration 2021

Last year we set two Sparrows Tweety and Sojourner out on their first of many adventures. The Sparrow Migration Program was born out of the idea of sharing adventures and bringing the community together. This was program was designed to allow the participants to spend two weeks with a wheel, to take her on an adventure, and send her onto her next destination. Tweety and Sojourner both have a journal where their spinner caretaker can write about their journey together and include photos of their experiences. We also included a community bobbin where each spinner would spin 5 grams on the bobbin with the end goal of having a community yarn that I would chain ply at the end of the migration. The first migration wrapped up at the end of January this year and I was sent the journals to scan and community bobbins to ply up. The first thing I did was look over the journals. It was so amazing to see all of the experiences each person had with the wheel. It was so inspiring to see all read about all the different adventures. We invite everyone to download and read all about Tweety and Sojourner's adventures. I love that not only do we have a written and photographic record of their adventures but we also have the yarns spun on the community bobbins. Each person got to spin 5 grams of wool onto the bobbin. I was anxious to see what all was spun on each bobbin, to see the colors, textures, and weight of singles spun. I knew that the community bobbins would bring on new challenges for me and I wanted to get to know the singles spun on each bobbin before I tackled chain plying the yarns. I decided to chain ply the yarns in order to keep everyone's yarns together so we could see and identify who spun each section of yarn. I normally don't rewind my yarn but for these two bobbins rewinding was going to be a must so I could see each yarn and determine if any precautions were needed or if anything needed additional care such as extra twist if there was a need. Luckily the Daedalus wheels make it extremely easy to rewind bobbins with the ability to switch from Scotch to Irish tension. I set up my Teal/Lime Sparrow in Irish while I had the community bobbins on my Black/Teal Sparrow so that I could wind the bobbins off the original bobbin and onto a new one. This allowed me to see and feel each yarn. It was so fun to see all the singles and I decided to rewind the bobbins an additional time that way I could capture the bobbins filling in the order they would have been filled during the migration. Once the bobbins were rewound it was then time to ply! The recording of the plying can be found below and I've also created timestamps to pin point the starting of each person's yarn so if you'd like to see a particular person's yarn it'll be easy to find. I decided to ply on the Starling V3FP both for bobbin size but also because the thick and thin that Su spun was already pushing the limits of the Sparrow so I would need the larger orifice and torque to ensure that the chain ply of that section would go smoothly. The plying of both yarns took me approximately an hour and a half! This was indeed a challenging ply but in ways I had not quite anticipated. The most challenging part of plying these yarns was due to the varying size of the singles which ranged from super fine to bulky thick and thin. There was also a variety of wools with some like Wensleydale not lending itself well to being chain plied. The variety in sizes meant that the amount of twist needed for each yarn would also vary which is a bit weird when it's all one contiguous yarn. In order to handle this I at some points in the spin had to increase the speed or decrease the speed and adjust tension as needed such as needing extra tension for the bulky plying areas while the super light weight areas needed less tension. When I skein off my yarn I out of habit skein off at a great distance from the bobbin to help even out the ply twist but for this yarn that was a mistake! By doing this I lost twist in the bulkier areas and ended up having to run the yarn through one more time to ensure all areas had a sufficient amount of twist. The finished yarns! It was amazing to see all the variety in the skeins between colors, textures, and WPI. Make sure to click on the images below to see a closer look at the skeins. The finished yarns will be woven by Becca to be displayed in future festival booths. I'm looking forward to seeing these two skeins woven up and cannot wait to see what adventures the next Migration has in store! Stay tuned for more news about the Sparrow Migration for 2022 happening this summer! - Evanita

  • Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival 2022

We have to send the love out to all the fabulous people who came by the booth to support us at our first Maryland Sheep and Wool experience. It was phenomenal and we can’t wait until next year to do it all over again. The weather was chilly but you still braved it in mass and we love you for it. We loved talking to each and every one of you. And I might of picked up some goodies including the most beautiful fleece I could imagine(and it’s my first raw fleece ever y’all). A special thank you to the fleece goddess who acquired this for me (RED you rock). Until next year everyone love and peace from Daedalus. - Becca
