  • Update On Hermes the Circular Hat Machine (CHM)

Tie Top Style Hat Update on Hermes the Circular Hat Machine 3/25/25 We are happy to say that Hermes is well along its way to production, albeit a bit behind our original projected release dates. Performance results have been astonishing honestly, with testers pushing it easily beyond the yarn abilities I had envisioned. So, big hooray there! Wear and longevity- specific testing has been ongoing and results have been really encouraging and firmly inside the design scope for these timeframes. The goal was to produce a 3d printed machine with specifically reinforced wear points, with hopes of getting the "mean time between failure" (MTBF) of these to be more like the metal machines out there. And with this lofty goal driving the final production design, I have really dug deep and redesigned some key parts to really put it over the top in lifespan and reliability. This redesign on these items, and their subsequent development and testing process, is the stage we are in now. Sadly this is a very time consuming part of the development process. It requires complex CNC parts to be produced and delivered, and then each iteration gets tens of thousands of hours of rigorous torture and wear analysis. I know this may sound corny, but I genuinely didn’t expect to fall in love with this project. Meaning, I thought it would be quick to design and perform decently enough for this price range. But at some point I saw how good it really could be. I wish I could give an honest estimation of when this will all be complete and Hermes will be ready for the public, but with festival season soon upon us, I’m afraid I can only say it’s on hold for now. Although these delays are discouraging, be assured it's to make sure these new products are truly worthy to stand beside our current product line, and provide many years of reliable service. We are going to close the queue for new names and once we return to this project and are ready for sales to begin, we will reach out to those on the queue first to let them know. We want to thank you all for supporting us as we develop these new products, things don't always go as planned, and time is fleeting, but we try to deliver our best. -Dave

  • A Flock Starlings will take flight in May (Updated 4/13/25)

Standard Flyer, Starling V3FP with Art Flyer, and Lace Flyer We are preparing the incubators for a new flock of Starlings with an anticipated flight schedule of early May after Rhinebeck. We have sent out Build emails for Starling V3FPs. Emails are sent from Support@daedalusspinningwheels.com. We highly recommend adding this email address to your contacts to help ensure the email doesn't land in spam. If your name is in the list below and you do not see the email please check your spam. S. Kusner L. Garcia C. Daly L. Wenk A. Panlaqui J. DelVecchio J. Genovese S. R S. Brandes L. Pleiness About the Starling V3FP Starling V3/V3FP was conceived to be our “all around” spinning wheel, capable of processing the widest range of yarns that would satisfy the vast majority of our clients. The ultra lightweight design lends itself very well towards the light end of that spectrum, with the standard flyer easily capable of lace finer than 100 wraps per inch (WPI). Since fine yarns is what Daedalus designs do best, we recently came up with a Lace Flyer for Starling V3/V3FP, extending its ability well into embroidery threads in the 200+ WPI range. However, it was recently pointed out to us that most of our wheels lean towards these finer yarns, and the only true Art Flyer was built for the mighty Magpie. But this is our flagship production spinner, and thus leaves the vast majority of our customers without a good option for art yarns. So, in an effort to stay faithful to the original design goal of a wheel to please everyone, and with the broadest spinning range available in mind. Dave went back to the drawing board with a fresh vision and created the Starling V3/V3FP Art Flyer. One of the goals of the design was to soften the radius of all the diversions in yarn path, as well as opening up the paths so that even larger yarn structures can be processed. The flyer shoulders and guides now use an open metal bars instead of enclosed loops, which help achieve both of these goals. This new feature has actually surpassed our expectations, with testers noting how easily and fluidically the yarn gets onto the bobbin. In addition, It uses the same bobbins as the Starling Standard Flyer, giving the spinner approximately 3-3.5 oz of capacity for bulky yarns. While this capacity may not be tailored to the extensive production of art yarn, it is just right for the hobbyist. Whether you are experimenting or testing out fresh ideas that you may wish to explore before embarking on a larger project, the Starling Art Flyer gives you options not previously available to this model. With all three flyers—the Lace, Standard, and Art—the Starling becomes the spinner's perfect class wheel. Offering a world of unlimited possibilities while learning and exploring the art of spinning. • Introducing Hermes the Circular Hat Machine (CHM)

Tie Top Style Hat Hi All, We’ve briefly discussed the Hermes Hat Machine a few times, well, we are ready to give you guys the details now. The Hermes is Daedalus's take on a large frame circular knitting machine, primarily for making hats and cowls but capable of so much more. Like always we only use ABS for our 3D printed parts and Carbon Fiber for the mast. Dave has designed a variety of cylinders which allows for the construction of hats from child size to a large adult hat. You can use a wide range of yarns from lace(#0) to sport(#2) on the 140 and 120 needle cylinders and from lace (#0) to dk(#3) on the 100 and 80 needle cylinders. Happy Cranking everyone! We would prospectively like to begin emailing the first names on the queue on March 31st, 2025. I don't know how many we will email, it will not be the whole list. The goal is to ship either immediately before or directly after Maryland Sheep and Wool. If you haven't signed up yet and are interested in a Hermes Hat Machine please join our queue here join our queue here . Our first public debut of the Hermes Hat machine will be at Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival . Come by the booth and pick one up. We will have a limited number. We will do 3 hat machine demos if you would like to see it work please stop by at 3 pm on Saturday or Sunday at 11 am and 3 pm, demos will last 15-20 minutes only. Attached is a video of Lindsey Hoehn making what we call a “5 Wedge Beanie” on the Hermes during early testing. It's an interesting construction, you begin at the top and essentially make 5 short row heels, then pick up the stitches and crank a tube, finished with a hung hem. Please enjoy, and follow along with us as Lindsey makes a hat. Gandier About the Magpie V2 Our most powerful and adaptable wheel to date, with an RPM (rotations per minute) of 2,550 with the standard flyer in use (1,550 with the art flyer—still worlds ahead of most e-spinners). We consider this our “all in one” spinning wheel, as it will spin fine singles as easily as it will spin your longest locks, super bulky yarn, coils and beehives, and every single yarn you can imagine in between. The art flyer’s 32 mm (1.26 inch) orifice (with a 20 mm reducer) means no more struggling with your loftiest, most inspired yarns, although the Standard Flyer’s 12 mm (with 6 mm reducer) still provides a soft landing whether you’re spinning low-twist singles or delicate lace. • Advice on Acquiring Wheels via Destash

We've noticed an issue lately with scammers trying to destash wheels on our Facebook group both our own wheels as well as traditional treadle wheels. In light of this, we thought it would be a good idea to provide some advice on how to safely purchase a wheel being destashed. Make sure the seller knows what they are selling. Sometimes it's noticeable that the seller doesn't actually know what they are selling. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Certain questions can help weed out scammers who don't actually understand the thing they are trying to sell. Inquire about getting additional photos. Scammers often pull from other peoples photos so asking for additional photos can help. Check the retail value of what is being sold. If the listing is grossly undervalued or overvalued exercise caution. Due to the high demand for our wheels, we have noticed that more often than not wheels are being destashed for their retail value or slightly under. Has the seller been active in the community in the past? Check their account to see when they joined the group and if they have made past postings to the community. If they have just recently joined the group or do not have any prior activity in the group exercise caution. Check the seller's profile to see what sort of stuff they have posted. For your safety, we strongly recommend against using the "Pay friends and family PayPal". Don't hesitate to contact support@daedalusspinningwheels.com to check in about the destash posting. Where to Find Destash listings? We highly recommend checking for destash listings on our Facebook Group, Discord Community, and Ravelry Group. - Evanita

  • Getting to know your destashed wheel

Hiya Everyone! This post is to help members of our flock who have purchased a destashed wheel and want to ensure everything is set up correctly and in good condition. First, we recommend that you download the manual for your wheel. Give Your Wheel a Check-Up While reviewing the manual please make sure to check over the whole wheel to ensure everything is set up correctly. Over time the prior owner may have changed things such as tension belt setup or alignment of parts which may not be ideal for operation. It is important to make sure to compare your wheel to the photos in the manual to make sure everything is set up correctly. If you are ever in doubt about something with your wheel please don't hesitate to reach out and contact us through support@daedalusspinningwheels.com . Flyer Guide Alignment One of the most common things we notice is that flyer guides are not positioned correctly. The wire loop of the guides must face toward the bobbin rather than facing up. When in any position other than facing in towards the bobbin this can result in your yarn snagging on the guide. The exception to this is the Magpie Art Flyer guides (not Pro Art) which must be positioned to properly align with the front of the flyer. Wire Guides must face toward the bobbin. Other positions may result in yarn snagging on the guide. For Magpie Art Flyers guides must be in this position to provide proper alignment with the front of the flyer and to avoid potential collisions with other parts of the wheel. Wheel Alignment There are several other aspects of the wheel that need to be in proper alignment. Check the following to ensure everything is aligned well. Motor - The back of the motor should be flush with the back of the motor mount. If the motor or motors(in the case of Falcon and Magpie V2) are sticking out the back of the motor mount this can cause a lack of gap between the motor pinion and the motor mount preventing the motor pinion from rotating properly. If your find that your motor(s) are not flush with the back of the motor mount simply remove the mount mount from your wheel and push the motor forward. If you have a dual motor Magpie set up in Irish Tension with Motors flush with the back of the motor mount. Motor Mount - The motor mount should be positioned so that the drive belt is parallel with either the face or rear of the wheel. For wheels with dual speed pinions like this Starling V3FP below you will need to scoot the motor forward or back when changing which groove on the pinion you wish to use. Tension Belt - For wheels where the Tension pieces can slide along the wheel's chassis carbon fiber tubes you'll want to make sure they are positioned so that the tension belt is parallel with the face or rear of the wheel. When determining whether the spring is on the left or right side of the wheel see information provided in the manual. Note that Daedalus wheels use two different materials for tension belts. For wheels without aluminum whorls on flyers and bobbins such as the Sparrow we use a black cord and for wheels with aluminum drums on bobbins and flyers (for wheels that can go into Irish) we use a yellow Kevlar cord. Kevlar should never be used on any plastic portion of the wheel or bobbins. While the Sparrow does come with aluminum whorl bobbins it cannot use Kevlar on its flyer so it only comes with the black cord material. Parts of your Flyer The flyer has a few key components you'll want to review. Rubber O-ring - At the base of the flyer axle you should see a small black rubber O-ring. This piece provides the appropriate distance between the flyer's magnets and the bearing of your bobbin. This is an example of a Rubber O-ring found at the base of all Daedalus Flyers. Bobbin Orientation - Your bobbin should have the aluminum whorl facing the back of your wheel. Sparrow set up in Irish Tension Rear Bearing - Your flyer will have one loose bearing on it that is placed at the very end of the flyer's axle. This will magnetically seat the flyer onto the rear of the wheel. The rear of the wheel will have magnets for it to latch onto. Rear Bearing held in place by two magnets Power Supply Making sure you have the right way to power your wheel is extremely important. All of our wheels operate at 15V. When receiving a destashed wheel make sure that the included power supply is 15V. Battery If a battery is included with your wheel make sure it is capable of powering the wheel at 15 volts. Cleaning Your Wheel You may find that your wheel may need a little TLC. To better understand how to care for your wheel in terms of cleaning make sure to check out our blog " A Spa Day for your Daedalus Spinning Wheel ". Warranty Registration   As a new Daedalus owner the first thing you'll want to do is head over to our Warranty Page  to register your device. When purchasing your wheel second hand the warranty does not transfer but we do recommend filling out the warranty registration form that way we can update our database with who currently owns the wheel. https://www.daedalusspinningwheels.com/warranty-registration   Download Your Manuals Make sure you read over your manual . Your wheel and/or winder may have come with a manual but if it didn't you can find our PDF manuals here. We also have PDF manuals for our Speed Controller and Battery. We highly recommend downloading all of your manuals and reading them over to ensure you know everything about your Daedalus product. You can download your manuals by going to the FAQ page and then click the "Download Manuals" button to be taken to the manuals section of the page. https://www.daedalusspinningwheels.com/faq Review your Tension Belt We have step-by-step instructions on how to set up your Tension Belt in the manual with photos but if you need to see larger photos we also have the same information available in our blog with images that can be viewed larger when clicked on. Please also note that the Kevlar (yellow) tension belts are only to be used on aluminum whorl surfaces only. • Roly-Polies and Whirligigs rolling into the Shop! - January 25th, 2025

We will have Roly-Polies and Whirligigs in the shop this Saturday, January 25th at 4 pm EST . We will have a timer banner at the top of the shop. Please make sure to read the following information to ensure you are ready for the shop update. Roly-Poly Shop Collection  - https://shop.daedalusspinningwheels.com/collections/roly-poly This is where you will find the listing for the Roly-Poly. Whirligig Shop Collection  - https://shop.daedalusspinningwheels.com/collections/whirligig   This is where you will find the listing for the Whirligig. How to Prepare for the Shop Update Make sure you have a Daedalus Shop account. If you haven't already signed up for a shop account login already on the new shop you'll want to ensure you do that ahead of time. At the top of the shop, you'll see a little person icon. Simply click on this and on the next page you'll click "Create account" to set up your account. Please ensure you fill out all the information and set up your shipping address so you don't have to worry about that later. We highly recommend you familiarize yourself with our shop. For the best shopping experience, we recommend using a device that is capable of using Apple Pay or Google Pay. These methods of payments if set up are extremely quick. We also recommend if using PayPal to ensure that you are already logged in to your PayPal account in advance. You'll want to ensure you add any additional items you'd like to purchase before the shop update. This could include things like a battery, kates, etc. If you are outside the Continental United States please make sure to read about our international shipping and battery delivery. For those that are outside of the continental US, we can provide assistance with helping you find the right battery to operate your wheel. https://www.daedalusspinningwheels.com/post/about-shipping-internationally   - Evanita

  • Holiday Season and Shipping

Greetings Flock, As Black Friday rolls around, the topic of shipping becomes an important one. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Please remember we are in the Holiday Season which means an extra load on shipping carriers, as well as the beginning of winter, and weather can be unpredictable. Everyone is doing their best to get you the package you ordered in a timely fashion. When Daedalus prints your order's shipping label, an email is sent automatically, including your tracking number. Please keep an eye on your package’s tracking to keep tabs on the progress of your package. If your package sits in any one location for more than 3 days please immediately contact Daedalus by email (support@daedalusspinningwheels.com), once we have made contact, Daedalus may ask you to contact UPS as well. By taking action early this can help avoid any unexpected delays if it can be helped. International customers should be prepared to pay customs fees either before delivery on the UPS website or at the time of delivery. Customs fees are fees your government enacts on you, Daedalus has nothing to do with this process or this fee, but we will try to assist as best we can with any problems. Please be aware some countries such as New Zealand require a personal import number for items over a certain value. Please check to see if your country requires this prior to your purchase if possible. The shop will be shutting down on December 10 for the remainder of the year, however, we will still be available for support. This year we are visiting family so we will not be home. This means following the 15th of December nothing will be able to be shipped until the New Year. The last day Daedalus will be shipping any orders or repairs is December 15, 2024. -Team Daedalus
